Topography

The terrain of Basirhat municipal area is flat and homogenous with occasional ‘highs’ and ‘lows’. The high and medium lands are constituted of sands and silts with clay blanketing, while the low lands mostly consist of clays with accumulation of water. These low lands are highly fertile. The river Ichhamati flows along the northern and eastern sides of the Municipal area, while river Jhilla, Sahebkhali, Dausa etc drain the area in southern and western parts of the terrain. Overall slope of the terrain is towards South-East

 

Soil

Very deep, poorly drained, fine soils are occurring on level to nearly level upper delta plain with clayey surface with moderate flooding, associated with very deep, imperfectly drained, fine loamy soils.

Administrative Boundaries:

On 1st January 1861, Basirhat Sub-division was constituted as per order of the Government. Before that Basirhat was under the jurisdiction of Barasat Sub-division. Initially this Sub-division was not named as “Basirhat”, it was “Basurhat”. This Sub-division covered an area of 352 sq. kms with 473 villages. The population was 2,68,146. In 1861, as per the order of Indian Government, “Basurhat” Sub-Division was formed consisting of Balia Pargana’s Basurhat, Kalinga, Harua, Husenabad Police Stations. The name “Basurhat” continued to exist till 1896. Afterwards it became “Basirhat”.

 

Linkages Of Rail, Road:

Basirhat is situated near the river Ichamoti which is a branch river of Ganges. It is well connected with Kolkata by rail (65 Kms) as part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system and road. It is very near to Bangladesh. It is 42 km from Barasat on the Barasat-Basirhat-Hasnabad branch line of Eastern Railway.
