Implementing Central and State Government Health programmes in the urban area, has primarily been, the role of the municipality in the area of Public Health. In addition, there are other health services, which the municipality provides, under the aegis of the West Bengal Municipal Act, 1993. These services include preventive measures for checking the spread of dangerous disease (vector control), providing immunisation including public vaccination and inoculation, registering an event of birth and death, construction, maintenance and operation of dispensaries, ambulance services, issue of food licence, to name a few.
In 2001, the Sex ratio of India was 933. The Sex ratio of West Bengal was 934. The sex ratio of North 24 Parganas was 926. Whereas the sex ratio of Basirhat was 988.
Basirhat Matri Sadan was established on 18th March 2000. For any health related support and consultation, the Basirhat municipality residents, including slum dwellers depend on Matri Sadan (Municipal Maternity Home) or health centers under HHW. There is a Sub Divisional Hospital within the Basirhat municipal boundary which serves not only the residents of Basirhat Municipality but also people from surrounding panchayat areas. There are some private nursing homes rendering satisfactory services to that part of population who can afford the cost. At present, Matri Sadan has total 12 nos. of bed and 2 G.N.M. nurses. Free Immunization Camps are conducted on every Wednesday at 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
